A great honour of

Pralb Chandra Basak - B.M. Union School & College

My teacher, Hon’ble Nurul Islam B.Sc. Chirkumar, fearless, extremely ethical, dutiful, diligent, an idealistic man. Nurul Islam Sir was born on January 1, 1931 in Nabinagar village of Sonargaon upazila. He matriculated from Hossainpur High School and B.Sc from Harganga College. He joined BM Union High School in 1954 as a B.Sc teacher. In 1983, he served as Assistant Headmaster and for some days as Headmaster (Acting). He ended his teaching career from this school on December 31, 1989 after serving for 35 years. During this long period, he did not miss a day of school due to illness or any other reason. He continued his teaching career by walking 4 km from his own home i.e. 8 km to and fro. Umbrella was his companion in all seasons, winter and summer. When meeting on the road, after exchanging greetings, it was customary to say ‘Ki he Bapu’. He was a unique political reformer; Extremely Mujibhak people. He had immense devotion to the father of the nation. To express any adverse opinion about Bangabandhu was to anger Sir. Controversy in the teacher’s auditorium means someone’s argument with the teacher; The subject is Bangabandhu. He didn’t want anyone to poke him to make him angry. Due to political differences in elections, he never worked for his uncle, but took a direct stand against him. During the liberation war there was a camp of freedom fighters in Sabdi village. At that time, he kept these freedom fighters in his house and entertained them. He used to protect the valiant freedom fighters with paternal love. On December 4, 1971, a group of freedom fighters fell into a block at Puranabandar, while crossing the river, he bravely went ahead and brought them to his house and sheltered them. I saw him as a non-religious person. During the appointment of our religious teacher Noor Mohammad Sir, an objection arose regarding him. Noor Mohammad Sir replied, “I will teach in the class, …. will not teach”. BSC sir supported him in this regard. Sir was employed. Noor Mohammad Sir became a successful teacher. Many people received letters in Islamia during his time. But because of this, he used to jokingly call Noor Mohammad Sir ‘…. Maulana says. Noor Mohammad sir respected him immensely. He used to come to school on time all his life, and returned home after school. Never had a private tutoring in his life. If a student wanted to understand something, he would explain it. He was a strict teacher to mischievous students. On the opening day of the school, he used to eat chire national food with sports teacher Gopal Sir as lunch. A very simple food menu. He used to eat from home in the morning, and went back home to have dinner. He was never seen in any hotel. He used to read Ittefaq newspaper a lot. Especially political subjects were his favorite subjects. He had a unique relationship with all the teachers. Especially Abdul Hai Sir was his student. He was called left…. etc. He performed the duty of High Sir’s guardian for life. Hi (Theatrical Personality) Sir’s crime was, he used to do dramas. And Nurul Islam sir was very anti drama. But Vidhibam sir was once made the president of the drama committee of the school. His presidency is said to be the golden age of school drama. One of the achievements of his time was that he convinced the headmaster, Yogen Sir, to act in a play. Even today, I can see the performance of Yogen sir as a judge. One of the drama productions of BSC sir is the play ‘Dakghar’. He did not give special opportunity to the candidates of SSC examination held in 1972. Because of which he had to be disgraced, but he did not bow down. Why should he give up the responsibility of invigilator in SSC examination later in life? In between teaching, he grew crops in his ancestral land. His ancestral land was about 8 acres. He also established himself as a progressive farmer. If asked to hear a memorable incident from his life, he told us that he had stopped his three mischievous students. But whatever their motives, they came before Sir, and were mesmerized by his fearless personality. This is normal. On December 8, 1999, the exemplary man passed away, remembering the exemplary ideals he had spread throughout his life. At the time of his death, he left countless successors of his ideals. – Md.
